Our Farewell
One more step, one more, and the guest will be at the door
There is an evening light on the road
I have known him for a lifetime
He is stepping through the doorway
Calling to him, he turns his head
I smile at him, saying "one more song"
He pauses by the door, leaning casually on the frame
Evening light pours across, pours through him
We listen together
When it is over, he raises a hand to me
A shadow moves on the floorboards
He steps across the threshold, into the West
And is gone
There is an evening light on the road
I have known him for a lifetime
He is stepping through the doorway
Calling to him, he turns his head
I smile at him, saying "one more song"
He pauses by the door, leaning casually on the frame
Evening light pours across, pours through him
We listen together
When it is over, he raises a hand to me
A shadow moves on the floorboards
He steps across the threshold, into the West
And is gone
