Alma Mater

My life is not coherent
It takes work to bring it into order
And the right place

But sometimes
The place breaks up the story
And lays out the pieces

Like old leaves
Riding on the front
Of some storm

The Place was :

A corner at College

And I am :
43 years old, I believe.

By the inn, at the corner, by the green, in 1985
The white buildings where I stood
With my skiis - with E. T. M.
Who rowed heavyweight
And we were going down to the golf course to go skiing

By the inn, by the corner, by the green, a few years ago
Where I entered the ramp to the Art Museum
With P.A.M., so damn sexy, who said
"I can feel the pull between us."
And we were going to look at art and then make love at her apartment in Jaffrey

Or two days ago, driving the north country
Doings ome research related to work
Stopping at the College
Asking some hockey player a question
And I was going to drive through some places
Where I used to ski, and then drive back home

Standing on the corner it all intersected through me
At once

I don't know when I wil be taken away.
